This was the de facto Oberliga championship game between first ranked MJC-Trier and second ranked Heidesheim (near Mainz). This game was originally scheduled in mid-season (March 2022), but was postponed twice due to COVID incidents. By the time it was finally played, it was clear that the winner would be league champion. Thus, there was a lot of buildup, setting up a big game atmosphere with a sizeable crowd at hand of about 200 people. (Read MJC's article, external link in German).
The younger Heidesheim team played a balanced game, and -- after opening with two successful 3 pointers -- led for most of the first half. Trier came back twice to briefly take the leads, but with 1:11 left, MJC trailed 53:56, and without our best 3PT shooters in the game and no chance to call a time-out (players cannot call time-outs), failed to tie the game.
Roman Porr played 9m 10s, scoring 1/3 three pointers (one partially blocked), 2 rebounds, 2 steals, as well as good defense.
As a result of this game Heidesheim wins the Oberliga and will advance to the Regional league, while MJC1-Trier will remain in the Oberliga. We were only one 3-pointer short of making it. This is a double letdown, because this prevents the other team Porr played on, champions of the Landeliga MJC2-Trier, from moving up into the Oberliga because no club may place two teams in the same class of play. Thus, next season 2022/23 all will stay the same.
